COI compliance by the numbers

Why certificate of insurance tracking matters

Certificate of insurance non-compliance is common and expensive. These industry figures explain why risk and compliance teams move COI tracking off spreadsheets.

70%

of certificates of insurance are non-compliant when first collected, and it takes an average of three follow-ups to make one compliant, according to industry certificate-tracking data (2025).

35%

of general liability claims end in a lawsuit, and a GL claim that goes to court averages more than $75,000 to defend and settle, per The Hartford claims data.

$35,000

is the average cost of a product-liability claim, and a customer or contractor injury claim averages about $30,000, according to Insurance Journal.

Figures summarize publicly reported insurance-industry and certificate-tracking sources. Individual results vary. Last reviewed July 2026.

How it works

From certificate to compliance in three steps

No spreadsheets to maintain, no manual keying, no certificates lost in inboxes.

  1. Step 1

    Collect

Upload the certificates you already have, one at a time or in batches of up to 50 files.

  2. Step 2

    AI reads & verifies

Every limit, date, policy number and endorsement checkbox is extracted, validated and compared against your requirements.

  3. Step 3

    Track & export

Expirations and deficiencies are flagged before they become exposure. Export to Excel, CSV, JSON or sync via API.

Built for risk transfer

Compliance checks that actually read the documents

A checkbox on a certificate is not proof. COISoftware reads the ACORD form and the endorsement pages, so you know the coverage your contract requires is really there.

Limit & coverage verification
Each occurrence, aggregate, auto CSL, umbrella and employers liability limits checked against your minimums per vendor type.
Expiration tracking
Every policy line tracked separately, with renewal reminders in your inbox before coverage lapses, not after.
Endorsement verification
Additional insured, waiver of subrogation and primary & non-contributory wording verified on the actual endorsement forms.
REST API
POST a certificate, receive structured JSON. Embed COI intake and verification inside your own onboarding flow.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is COI tracking software?

COI tracking software collects certificates of insurance from your vendors, subcontractors and tenants, extracts the coverage data, verifies it against your insurance requirements, and tracks expirations so you are never exposed by a lapsed or insufficient policy.

Which documents can COISoftware read?

ACORD 25 certificates of liability insurance, ACORD 24/27/28 property forms, additional insured endorsements (CG 20 10, CG 20 37), waivers of subrogation (CG 24 04, WC 00 03 13), policy declarations, surety bonds, W-9s, business licenses, loss runs and more.

Does it verify endorsements or just the certificate?

Both. The ADDL INSD and SUBR WVD checkboxes on an ACORD 25 are informational only, so COISoftware also reads the endorsement pages themselves to confirm the wording, schedule and form numbers your contract requires.

How do expiration reminders work?

Every coverage line is tracked separately by its own expiration date. You get an email as a policy crosses 60, 30 and 15 days to expiration, and again once it has lapsed. Each one names the vendor whose renewed certificate you need to collect, and the dashboard flags anything expired, expiring or deficient.

Is there an API?

Yes. POST a certificate and receive clean structured JSON with limits, dates, endorsement status and compliance results, so you can run extraction inside your own onboarding or procurement systems.

How is pricing structured?

Simple self-serve plans with no per-vendor minimums and no mandatory service contracts. Start free and upgrade when your volume grows. Enterprise adds a dedicated account manager and a data processing agreement.
